  • Stricken, smitten and afflicted

    Here are most of the verses from our Good Friday service.

    Mark 15:15-41 (ESV)

    So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

    And the soldiers led him away inside the palace (that is, the governor’s headquarters), and they called together the whole battalion. And they clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on him. And they began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they were striking his head with a reed and spitting on him and kneeling down in homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the purple cloak and put his own clothes on him. And they led him out to crucify him.

    And they compelled a passerby, Simon of Cyrene, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. And they brought him to the place called Golgotha (which means Place of a Skull). And they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him and divided his garments among them, casting lots for them, to decide what each should take. And it was the third hour when they crucified him. And the inscription of the charge against him read, "The King of the Jews." And with him they crucified two robbers, one on his right and one on his left. And those who passed by derided him, wagging their heads and saying, "Aha! You who would destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save yourself, and come down from the cross!" So also the chief priests with the scribes mocked him to one another, saying, "He saved others; he cannot save himself. Let the Christ, the King of Israel, come down now from the cross that we may see and believe." Those who were crucified with him also reviled him.

    And when the sixth hour had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?" which means, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" And some of the bystanders hearing it said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah." And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Wait, let us see whether Elijah will come to take him down." And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

    There were also women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the younger and of Joses, and Salome. When he was in Galilee, they followed him and ministered to him, and there were also many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

    Psalm 49: 7-9

    Truly no man can ransom another,
    or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly
    and can never suffice, that he should live on forever
    and never see the pit.

    Isaiah 42: 1& 6

    Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
    my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my Spirit upon him;
    he will bring forth justice to the nations.

    I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness;
    I will take you by the hand and keep you;I will give you as a covenant for the people,
    a light for the nations,

    Isaiah 53:4-10 (ESV)

    Surely he has borne our griefs
    and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken,
    smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions;
    he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
    and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray;
    we have turned—every one—to his own way;and the LORD has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

    He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,
    yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,
    and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,
    so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away;
    and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living,
    stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked
    and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence,
    and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the LORD to crush him;
    he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt,
    he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

    1 Peter 2:22-24 (ESV)

    He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.

    Philippians 2:5-8 (ESV)

    Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

    Romans 3:25-26 (ESV)

    whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  • What do Bathing Suits with stockings, bread,quilts and concrete have in common?

      This blog of course....ha!

    So a hodge podge of life at the D. house:

    First, the driveway is done:

    March 2008 004 March 2008 017

    Next, We attended the 2008 Mid-Atlantic Quilt Festival and saw a lot of this:

    The elephants ear is dimensional and sticks out of the quilt...too cool and the place setting was a cute kids quilt I thought.

    March 2008 007 March 2008 008

    The rodeo rider was all done by machine, wish you could get a real up close to all of the stitching. It had 3D elements too.  The dreseden plate with inset colors was just lovely and one of my machine quilt favorites.

    March 2008 009 March 2008 010

    Close up of the Dresden...check out that stitching. The fish was just bizarrely awesome, the scales are 3D too.

     March 2008 011 March 2008 012

    The hearts were a variation on a pattern I have, good for a signing quilt. The horse of course for Elena.

    March 2008 015March 2008 014

    Orange for Maxwell...the girls insisted I take the shot and post it.

    March 2008 013

    After that coolness, we went to Fl to close on our house. The girls thought, Hey, Florida, we can swim in the pool.....hahahhaa...turns out we went just as they got a cold snap. But the girls were determined to swim anyway...here's Hannah ready for a dip: March 2008 018 awesome...bathing suit, stockings, a velour jacket and red boots....you'll be glad to know she wasn't arrested by the fashion police.

    Lastly, I've been trying to bake bread for us, partly to save money, but also partly because I can do it again now that I have a new awesome mixer (thanks Mommy for my Christmas gift card).  I wanted the texture of store bought bread, but have been stymied. That is, until Lisa and Emily and I had a snazzy bread discussion after church during our congregational meal.

    So here's two pics. The little loaf was done with all-purpose flour, and 2 risings...standard stuff. It is also a doubled recipe so it would fit in my awesome long loaf pan.  The large loaf was done with bread flour (and less at that, it took much more a.p. flour to do the other loaf...bizarre) and 3 risings. I punched down after the first, turned it and let it go again before punching down, shaping and letting rise. Then...I forgot about it for a long while (oops) and when I went back to it, it was way over the top of the pan. So I was really pleased with that. The large loaf was also only 1 loaf recipe, not doubled.  And the texture....it tastes and feels like wonder bread gang! Woot! I'm lovin' it!

    Have an excellent Holy Week! May Jesus be praised for He is awesome!

  • Protector of Secret Dignity!

    So like, the kids are in the grocery store with me, and we have this system...in order to protect their eyes from additional immodesty ( I mean, no matter how tempted I am to purchase large mu mu's to cover todays fairly naked young woman on the street.... I just don't have the money for that kind of outlay) So, I usually go through the line while my girls cover their eyes, and I flip all the magazines showing skin over, and if they are just as bad on the back, I cover them with a gardening magazine.....

    My kids and I had been playing a game through the store "Elena...your mission is to get the mayonnaise without being seen...good luck" and the girls were wearing sunglasses to protect their secret identity....

    So, we're in line and Elena takes off her glasses. Lizzy spots her and yells "Elena!! Put your glasses back on! You have to protect your secret dignity!"  So I thought that was great. Yes, by all means, you must protect your secret dignity....I just wish other people wanted to do that as well! .

    It's not only dress though... I mean, we practically have nothing left to the imagination visually, but I notice that many people have now gone in for publicly airing their private lives...I mean, apart from Jerry Springer.  And I'm not talking just cell phone use. The girls and I were in Olive Garden some weeks back, and we're having a nice relaxing dinner....I like Olive Garden not only for it's food, but it's relatively quiet atmosphere. We were finishing up and in the coffee stage when a family was seated directly behind us. Actually, as far as many families go, they were a fairly good thing....it was a whole family with pre-teens and they were obviously enjoying being with one another.  The thing is, they chose to describe at length and at the top of thier voices how funny mom and dad are when they're drunk and so forth.... All of them laughing and all, but the topic sorta degenerated from there.  Until I could get the check and pay, we were kinda stuck listening to stuff we had no desire to hear, and wouldn't have if this family hadn't been so obviously intent on letting everyone in the place know how "cool" they are or something....please people...protect your secret dignity.

    There, that's my rant for the day .  So I would encourage you to encourage your children and families to be Protectors of their Secret Dignity. Kind of like a knights of the round table thing.  That means, sister shouldn't be regaling all her little friends with how embarassed brother was when he did "blah blah blah" and brother, it's okay to say "sis, if you wear that, I will have to follow you around to defend your honor and I'd really rather not be called on to do so for such a preventable circumstance....here's a nice mu-mu from Mrs. D."

    hahaha...

    so, the house in Fl finally sold to someone who really loves it and is getting to know the neighbors, what more could I ask? I'm back home and working on the house. The floor was put in today and the kitchen should be done by early next week....so then we're finished for a great while (one hopes).

    Sorry I haven't started the widows study as yet....I've had way too much on my plate, but should be calming down more and able to do that kind of concentration.

    Hope you all have a blessed week end. ~Kate

    The floors are not done yet, we've got a laminate tile for the gathering room, and a laminate wood for the other rooms. The bedrooms all have parquet flooring right now which we shall be keeping.

    Well Mom, what do you think? I like the border around the new doors, very art deco.  We're still plugging away at painting and setting up.

    Barring any unforseen problems, we're also closing on the sale of our Fl house at the end of the month. It'll probably be a tough goodbye, so keep us in prayer.

    Have a great week! ~Kate

  • Today we celebrate God's Amazing Love!!!

    dark heart with rose

    Love bade me welcome;

    yet my soul drew back,

    Guilty of dust and sin.

    But quick-eyed Love,

    observing me grow slack

    From my first entrance in,

    Drew nearer to me,

    sweetly questioning

    If I lack anything.

    “A guest, “ I answered,

    “worthy to be here.”

    Love said, “You shall be he.”

    “I, the unkind, ungrateful?

    Ah, my dear,

    I cannot look on Thee.”

    Love took my hand, and smiling, did reply,

    “Who made the eyes but I?”

    “Truth, Lord, but I have marred them,

    let my shame

    Go where it doth deserve.”

    “And know you not,” says Love,

    “who bore the blame?”

    “My dear, then I will serve.”

    “You must sit down,” says Love,

    “and taste my meat.”

    So I did sit and eat.

    ~George Herbert, 1593-1633

    Isn't that purty? I found it in my Family Celebrations book under the Valentines devotion.

    Valentine, a pastor and physician in Rome, was beheaded by order of Claudius the Goth in 269AD. It is his life and death for Christ that we commemorate on February 14.

    The celebration of romantic love actually has nothing to do with St. Valentine. This aspect of Valentine's Day was added later as a result of the belief that birds mated on Feb. 14. This day came to be associated with lovers and courting couples.

    While there certainly is a place for romantic love in God's design, it cannot compare to the love that Valentine's life exemplified. His sacrificial love mirrors the ultimate love, the love that God showed toward us when He gave His Son Jesus as the sacrifice for our sins.

    The King of love my Shepherd is,

    Whose goodness faileth never;

    I nothing lack if I am His,

    And He is mine for ever.

    Perverse and foolish oft I strayed,

    But yet in love He sought me,

    And on His shoulder gently laid,

    And home, rejoicing, brought me.

    ~The King of Love My Shepherd Is

    Have a blessed Valentines Day! We're off to a celebration with some families from Church.

    ~Kate

  • "So....when is Jesus coming back?

    Is it in like, six weeks or something?" Hannah asked me tonight.

    I love that. I love that my girls are anticipating Jesus return, granted, it's largely because they want to see their Daddy again, but I'm glad of it none the less.  I love the description in C.S. Lewis' Narnia series how all the children felt their hearts thrill at the name of Aslan alone. And the joy of always looking for his return.

    I hope my children have the joy of that kind of anticipation. A kind of Christmassy anticipation of Christs return...almost dancing with excited expectation. Is He here yet?! Not tomorrow, but the next day?! Is He here?!

    Perhaps it was because of my own self absorption, but I only ever remember my father talking of anticipating when he could join Jesus in heaven....I don't really remember a thrill of when will Jesus come back to earth.  I think I prefer the latter.  I often try to imagine the sound of the trumpets, so joyful and pearcing, coming from everywhere and nowhere. Cool stuff to imagine.

    I hope this doesn't spark me into another of my bizarre totally unbiblical second coming dreams. Last time I had one, Jesus came back with a Bible and a hi-lighter, and we were all watching it on the evening news.

    I hope you all have a blessed Lord's Day tomorrow. We're having congregational meal after church and practicing voice parts of a hymn so that the whole church can sing in harmony. I wonder if Jesus will come back tonight? OR tomorrow....maybe in six weeks or something.

    "People get ready, Jesus is coming, soon we'll be going home..."

    G'night,

    ~Kate

  • The Widow Directed to the Widows God

    John Angell James. (1785-1859) John was a nonconformist. He was unpretentious, having two honorary Doctorate of Divinity Degrees conferred upon him, but declining to use the titles. He was a Calvinist by creed, but dwelt more on Christian duty than doctrinal niceties. All together he wrote 17 titles including Female Piety which I also recommend highly.

    For Jamie, and any others interested.... I will be going through this book chapter by chapter, a sort of mini-study, but at my other blog site, which I'll link to later.

    As far as a quick synopsis. I've not finished the book, but as it stands thus far I would highly recommend it.  It is written by a Pastor who himself was a widower." In 1817 he fell ill and for nine months was unable to preach. He seems to have been suffering from complete nervous exhaustion. His wife nursed him through his illness. Not long after his recovery she herself fell sick and died. The loss of this affectionate and gracious lady affected him deeply, but did not cause him to draw back from public work."(www.gracegems.org james biography) He handles the subject with gracious, loving, care and also exhortation. This is not a feel good-"you poor deprived person-wallow away", nor is it a "suck it up-get over it-well you know he's in heaven so why are you still grieving?" kind of thing either.

    If you are disposed to dislike Puritan preaching than you will have many phrases to pull out and complain over...but I would say that you would have to be wanting to find fault as well as pulling much out of context.

    I find Puritans and those like them to be some of the most humble, kind, gracious, studious and diligent servants of Christ through the writings that I have seen.  They are much concerned with love and growth, never are you to be stagnant. As John himself says: "One of the errands on which the Son of God came from heaven to earth was to bind up the brokenhearted and comfort all who mourn. Like their divine Master, ministers ought to be sons of consolation and perform the functions of a comforter as well as those of an instructor. For if pure and undefiled religion consists in visiting the widows and fatherless in their affliction, how much more incumbent is it on its teachers to cherish and manifest the same tenderness of spirit towards this deeply suffering portion of the human family? The bruised heart loves the gentlest handling, and the troubled spirit is soothed with the simplest music. The soul has no inclination at such times and in such circumstances for anything but the "sincere milk of the Word," leaving the strong meat for other and healthier seasons."

    That being said, you may have some linguistic difficulties if you are not a word person, that is, loving language for the sake of language -it's beauty and rhythm. You will find many words we no longer use in day to day language.  This book is not adapted, but printed in all it's original form.

    It opens with a letter of commiseration and proceeds gently into empathetic commentary on various states of widowhood. Like many Puritan works, you are encouraged to lift your head up to heaven nigh on at the start. It does seguay quickly into a sermon like series from whence you will begin to be encouraged, exhorted, and challenged.

    This book derives from a man who knows that our God is a God of order, not chaos. A God who expects us to be a people of self-control and not given over to overly dramatic sentiment. If someone is looking for an excuse to vent their internal struggles and woes without restraint it will not be found here. This is not a book that justifies uncontrolled grief. It does not ignore or teach that grief is wrong, as the author puts it: "You may weep, you must, you ought. You are placed by Providence in the region of sorrow, and tears befit your condition. Let them flow, and mine shall flow with them, for if it be ever our duty to weep with those that weep, it is when the Widow is before us"

    I'll open with that . I shall work on my first chapter today and perhaps post it tonight on my blogger site, which you can get to from xanga (for anyone wishing to join me on the journey) by clicking on "Meaty Bites" at the top right of this page. See you there!

    Have a blessed Lord's Day! ~Kate
